Kids' entertainment, ceilidh* bands, fiddle orchestra and more.

Whilst Catgut & Steel perform mostly as a duo, they have other Dunedin-based incarnations to choose from.

*What's a ceilidh (or ceili, pron: "kay-lee") ?
Originally a Scottish and Irish word for a gathering where everybody "does a turn", it has become synonymous with dancing, specifically the traditional strathspeys, jigs and reels from those cultures. Today we use the term to refer to these dances as well as colonial-style barndances, easy to pick up and fun to do. Mike is an expert dance caller who will "walk" you through each dance - no expertise is required other than knowing your left from your right! More about the dances here.

Radler Electric Ceilidh Band

This five-piece folk/rock band has entertained the length and breadth of Otago and Southland playing and calling dances for weddings, conferences and community celebrations. Mike and Anna are supplemented by electric guitar, bass and drums for a driving rhythm unit that will keep you dancing all night.

KatAnnaFiddle

Anna Bowen is joined by story-teller extraordinaire Kaitrin McMullen in a diverse range of not-just-for-kids shows. Many educational units compatible with school curriculums, community and family occasions. Always funny, pertinent and memorable, Katrin and Anna have been entertaining children around New Zealand for nearly ten years.

The Dunedin Ceilidh Orchestra

Like your occasion to be a little more traditional? The DCO is an eight-to-ten piece traditional ensemble with dance caller, fiddles and a range of instruments from Scottish smallpipes to Irish bouzouki, led by Mike and Anna. Perfect for fancy dress, renaissance or ceremonial balls, themed conferences, weddings or the like.

 The Dunedin Scottish Fiddle Orchestra

In the tradition of the great massed fiddle orchestras in Scotland and around the Commonwealth, Anna Bowen has convened an exciting array of musicians and musical arrangements from the strathspeys, jigs and reels of Scotland to American, Irish, European and Scandinavian tunesets. Whether as background music to your St Andrews Night celebrations or toe-tapping entertainment for a civic function, the DSFO is sure to enliven any event.
